Blueridge Chamber Festival 3: About Face!

At the turn of the century, classical music stood at a crossroads. Would it continue in the lush, lavish late-Romantic style spearheaded by Brahms, or break away and turn in a new direction? This program highlights two major chamber works premiered just a year apart: Dora Pejaevis Piano Quartet and Arnold Schoenberg's Chamber Symphony no. 1. Pejacevics approach, while brilliant and unique, remains firmly in line with the songful and lavish style of Brahms, while Schoenberg takes a first major step towards a total break from harmony.
