The Vancouver Chopin Society presents Kate Liu, piano
Kate Liu, the remarkable artist who won the bronze medal and the prestigious prize for best mazurka performance at the 2015 Warsaw International Chopin Competition, will make her long-awaited and much anticipated Vancouver debut.
Kate Liu was seen by many jurors and musicians as the Competition’s most original artistic personality and won the hearts of her Polish audience with the authenticity of her Chopin playing. Polish Radio listeners voted her “Best Pianist” in the competition.
Ever since her watershed victory at the Chopin Competition, Liu’s schedule has been filled with memorable performances in Europe, Asia and the United States. In a glowing review of her recital, the Washington Post calls her a “grand talent.”
In 2011 Liu was featured on PBS’s “From the Top at Carnegie Hall” and Carnegie Hall’s "Big Break" (YouTube contest). In addition to ongoing piano studies at Curtis Institute, she was named a 2018-19 Gilmore Rising Star.
In addition to the concert, renowned music historian Alan Walker, universally acknowledged authority on 19th century music, and author of the monumental new biography of Chopin – Fryderyk Chopin – A Life and Times – will give a lecture in association with Kate Liu’s recital on May 19th. The lecture is for ticket holders only, and will take place at the Vancouver Playhouse Salon at 1:15 pm. A limited number of Walker's Chopin biography will be available for purchase, and the author will be available after the talk for book signing.
