Vancouver New Music presents Pantayo (Toronto) with Guest Gamelan Bike Bike (Vancouver)
Self described as “ an all-women lo-fi R&B gong punk collective”, Pantayo is a Toronto-based ensemble that combines traditional gong chime instruments of the Philippines with synth-based electro grooves, taking kulintang music in unique and unexpected directions. Their music is grounded in the traditions of Maguindanaoan and T'boli peoples, but explores the possibility of kulintang influenced by the group members’ identities as Diasporic Filipinas.
“…nuanced and layered…acknowledging origins and composing conscientiously are integral to how Pantayo makes music.” – CBC
In their first ever performance in Vancouver, Pantayo will perform a full set of their own music, as well as one piece that will be created with local community members at a workshop held the day before the concert.
The evening will open with a set of music from Vancouver’s Gamelan Bike Bike – an experimental gamelan group that performs on instruments built from discarded bicycle frames. Inspired by the gamelan music of Bali, Indonesia, Gamelan Bike Bike combine excellent musicianship with a fun, DIY aesthetic.
