Lunarfest presents The New Butterfly Lovers
What happens when you take one of China’s most famous folk tales, pair it with the equally renowned, Asian-inflected concerto it inspired, and then give it to a western ballet company, a Japanese Canadian ballerina, and a Vancouver choreographer to interpret? – Janet Smith, The Georgia Straight, 2018.
Imagine Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, the main characters from the eastern classic romance, Butterfly Lovers, showing their affection for each other using ballet dancing. Imagine Yingtai expressing her deepest sorrow for Shanbo’s death while the symphony of a western orchestra plays in the background.
Canadian choreographer Joshua Beamish aims to break down tradition by using ballet, combined with SFUCO Co-President Dan Jeremy Reyes’ rendition of the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, the show is set to tell a modernized version of this classic story.
Hailed as the Eastern “Romeo and Juliet” this tale transcends time as it gets envisioned in a new medium, using body language and music to express emotion. Going beyond gender and cultural traditions, east meets west in a captivating new experience. Don’t miss out on this exciting event this Lunar New Year!
