Original Epic Stage Productions presents Along the River During the Qingming Festival 清明上河图

"Along the River During the Qingming Festival," the foremost masterpiece among China's "Ten Great Classical Paintings," was created by Zhang Zeduan, an artist of the Northern Song Dynasty. It vividly captures the commercial vitality and everyday life of Bianjing (present-day Kaifeng, Henan Province), the world's most prosperous metropolis of the 12th century, stretching from its suburban outskirts to the bustling city center. Universally recognized as an artistic treasure, this painting has been celebrated as a window into the depths of Eastern classical civilization.

Our creative journey begins precisely from this painting...

This is not merely a viewing, but an immersive journey.

The audience will step into the temporal and spatial landscape of late Northern Song Bianjing alongside the unfolding drama. The production employs a panoramic narrative structure to reveal a world where prosperity and crisis coexist. It is here that Zhang Zeduan, caught between celebrating an idealized peace and documenting the unvarnished truth, faces his ultimate choice. Pressured by the powerful, inspired by the integrity of scholars, and driven by the mission of art and patriotic devotion, how does he uphold the conscience of his brush amid the turbulent currents, ultimately completing this immortal work?

The play also reveals a timeless truth: the most artistic is often found in the most ordinary of lives. The street vendors carrying their loads, the shopkeepers hawking their goods, the children playing freely; it is the labor, joys, and sorrows of these ordinary people, the living breath of the streets and alleys, that form the true enduring power resonating across a millennium and the very pulse of a civilization’s continuity.

A Fusion of Drama and Dance

This production seamlessly blends the narrative depth of spoken drama with the lyrical expression of dance drama. Dialogue propels the plot forward, while physical movement articulates inner thoughts and emotions. In pivotal scenes, it achieves an artistic elevation where “when words fall short, dance carries the meaning; when dance reaches its peak, words etch it into memory,” creating multidimensional emotional layers and profound artistic imagery.

The stage production of "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" is not only a feast for the senses but also a cultural bridge connecting East and West, past and present. Regardless of your cultural background, we invite you to step into this flowing scroll of the East, to feel the deep and surging vitality of Chinese civilization, and to experience a soul-stirring resonance that echoes across a thousand years.
