Dancing in the Street: Free Hustle Dance Drop-in Classes
Born in the clubs of New York City during the 70's disco era, the Hustle is a partnered style of dance that is done in 3 counts to 4 count music. Much like Salsa, the Hustle has roots in Mambo, but rather than dancing close, the Hustle integrates an ebb and flow type of partner movement; often similar to the feeling in Swing. In recent years, the resurgence of this style of dance has been picked up by a new generation - street and club dancers with foundations in breaking, waacking, hip hop, house, popping and more. What is unique about the Hustle is that the music is flexible, and can be done to funk, nu-disco, house, hip hop, R&B, future soul, and boogie - styles of music that street and club dancers already move to. As a result of this - social partner dancing is finding its place again with young people, as it is also bridging a gap, creating a new community of diverse and multi-generational dancers from all walks of life.
Every Tuesday at 8pm at Robson Square Ice Rink, you can find a group of dedicated Hustle dancers, called Hustle at RS, who have been teaching and building the community over the last couple of years. During this 4-week series on šxʷƛ̓exən Xwtl’a7shn (fomerly the QET Plaza), we will have teachers from Hustle at RS teaching the foundations in connection, musicality, technique, form, free-styling, and more. Class will be catered towards ALL LEVELS, beginners always welcome. Minimum age to participate is 13 years old.
Presented by Vancouver Civic Theatres in partnership with Shape Shifter Studio, Vancouver Street Dance Association, and Hustle at Robson Square.
