New Old World Music presents Qalandar Reza Album Launch
Qalandar is a contemporary Persian ensemble rooted in deep tradition while embracing innovation and improvisation. Formed originally by Reza Honari, Ali Razmi, and Hamin Honari, the group later expanded into a dynamic quintet with the addition of Gordon Grdina and Kenton Loewen. Over the years, Qalandar has developed a distinctive sound shaped by the musical histories, cultural backgrounds, and creative voices of its members.
The ensemble features:
Ali Razmi – Tar
Hamin Honari – Tombak & Daf
Kenton Loewen – Drums
Gordon Grdina – Oud
Special Guest: Fathieh Honari – Vocals
Their music brings together Persian and Arabic modal traditions, contemporary composition, and free improvisation. Qalandar’s repertoire reflects both the depth of Iranian classical music and the exploratory spirit of modern creative music. The group has performed widely across Canada, including appearances at the Aga Khan Museum, CBC, Coastal Jazz and Blues Society, and the Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra.
This performance marks the launch of “Reza,” an album recorded with Reza Honari shortly before his passing. The evening is both a celebration of the music he helped create and a tribute to his life as a founding member, father, partner, friend, and artist.
