Time Will Tell Arts Society presents Rivers of Rhythm: Trichy Sankaran in Concert
The legendary South Indian percussion master returns to Vancouver for one night only!
Sankaran leads an ensemble featuring Raman Kalyan on Carnatic flute, Curtis Andrews, his longtime student, on percussion, and Jared Burrows on electric guitar. Together, the musicians bring South Indian classical repertoire into conversation with jazz, performing works from the 18th century alongside Sankaran’s own compositions.
A centrepiece of the evening will be the tani avartanam, a mridangam solo that showcases Sankaran’s intricate rhythmic imagination and command of the instrument. The mridangam is the principal percussion instrument of Carnatic music, the classical music tradition of South India.
Since arriving in Canada in 1971, Sankaran has shared his artistry around the world, working across Carnatic music, jazz, gamelan, African music, contemporary classical music and improvisation. Rivers of Rhythm offers Vancouver audiences an opportunity to hear a master percussionist whose work spans traditions and generations.
Don't miss this chance to experience the maestro of mridangam live in Vancouver.
