The Prop Master’s Dream is a two-hour production that delves into Gwan Wah-Kwan’s extraordinary life journey. Born to a Chinese father and an Indigenous mother in Vancouver, Wah-Kwan was taken to China by his father at the age of one, leaving his mother behind. A year after their return, his father passed away, and Wah-Kwan was adopted by Phoenix, a Cantonese opera artist. At 18, Wah-Kwan returned to Canada, facing numerous challenges, including identity issues. Through Cantonese opera, Indigenous drumming, and modern jazz music, his life stories reveal the historical and cultural legacy of Vancouver's Chinese community.
Additionally, The Prop Master’s Dream is a bold reinvention of the Cantonese Opera art form, illuminating the long history of Chinese-Indigenous relations in B.C. The story weaves themes of connection, adversity, friendship, and history. This opera aims to unite people through art, showcasing Cantonese Opera to seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers.
This enhanced production at the Vancouver Playhouse will bring a fresh and innovative take on the original, featuring top-notch lighting and updated projection elements. Performed in Cantonese and English (with Chinese & English surtitles).
