Vancouver Queer Film Festival presents Gugu's World
Gugu’s life with his strong-willed grandmother Dilma feels like an endless playground. In their little community in Northeastern Brazil, he dreams of being a soccer player. He wears what glimmers, dances, and befriends every girl in his class. While his disapproving father and the rival boys in his class scoff at his effeminate nature, Gugu is unbothered. Dilma, his pillar of support, is often by his side (when she’s not stealing a man’s heart on the dance floor). But, a sudden shift turns their world upside down: Dilma begins to show symptoms of Alzheimer’s. Gugu tends to her in secret knowing that neither of them can live freely if she’s sent to a hospital.
With a breakout performance by Yuri Gomes, this unforgettable story of a boy-wonder was crowned multiple international awards. Gugu’s coming-of-age invites audiences into the hearts of characters fueled by unconditional love.
