Zakir Hussain Masters of Percussion make a long-awaited return to Vancouver, co-presented by Caravan World Rhythms and KVP Heritage.
Tabla Wizard Zakir Hussain, one of the most loved and celebrated Indian Classical artists, is coming back to Vancouver with his well admired, curated, produced and conducted series 'Zakir Hussain and Masters of Percussion', accompanied by some of the finest artists of Indian music and world percussion to tour North America and Europe. Masters of Percussion began as a platform for both popular and rarely heard rhythm traditions from India and grew in stature over the years as it expanded to include great drummers and percussionists from many world traditions, including Jazz and Latin music. All of it creates a truly beautiful field from which he can bring Masters of Percussion to the West and the 2023 version will be no exception presenting audiences with extraordinary, exciting and spontaneous combinations of percussive as well as melodic performances.
Zakir Hussain's 2023 ensemble includes Indian Sarangi player Sabir Sultan Khan, the son of legendary Sarangi Maestro Ustad Sultan Khan Ji; Colombian Percussionist Tupac Mantilla, the world renowned percussionist who's performed with some of the biggest names in the world of jazz and appeared at venues and festivals around the world; Djembe player Melissa Hie's knowledge of African traditional rhythms from a young age and her skills in playing Djembe, Conga, Balafon and Barra has made her a favourite of many bands as a percussionist with collaborations in various genres ranging from jazz to electronic music; and the Indian Dholak Maestro Navin Sharma, the son of illustrious Shri Shyam Raghuram Sharma and disciple of Tabla Maestro Ustad Allah Rakha, and now Navin finds himself with Zakir after playing earlier with his father Allah Rakha, brothers Fazal Qureshi & Taufiq Qureshi, Pandit Anindo Chatterjee, Ranjit Barot, Shivamani and Vikku Vinayakam among others.
